The Corona company claimed responsibility for the huge in crease in writers from the launch of this model The model remained virtually unchanged until production was stopped for WWII. Corona had to play catch up with the rest of the industry, as newer larger portables were coming to market. The Smith Corona Super Silent series typewriter was a union of the Sterling and Silent models. The Speedline versions were noted to be very well built and were the choice of many writers and typists for decades. This look gave the machines rounded features with a matte finish. In the 1950's under the company's new name, Smith-Corona, came a re-design of the 1930's flat top line portables, capitalizing on the style of the day with a streamlined look billed as Speedline. The Standard model eventually becoming the Clipper, remained tremendously popular. Even though the Standard model lacked some of the bells and whistles of its siblings Sterling and Silent, this machine outsold other more expensive models and offered the best value for the money. This design dropped the type bar basket instead of the carriage when typing capitals. However, Corona became best known for its introduction of the Floating Shift mechanism. All the models came with many features such as touch selector, a piano key action and a complete frame to surround the mechanism, which were available only to standard office machines. They came out of the Depression launching a line of new portables: Standard, Sterling and Silent all with a flat top style. The 1930's saw a lot of changes for the L.C.

Gabrielson remained chief engineer for the Smith brothers until his death in Syracuse on August 15, 1936, aged 67. The Nos 7 (76 characters) and 8 (84 characters) succeeded the No 4 and 5 in 1915. The No 6 with a 20-inch carriage had emerged in 1909. The No 3 came out in 1907 with a 14-inch carriage (and with a 18-inch carriage in 1925), followed by the Nos 1 and 2 successors, the Nos 4 and 5 in 1911. The L.C.Smith No 1 and No 2 came out simultaneously (the No 1 had 76 characters and the No 2 had 84). By the end of 1904 he had not one but two typewriters for them. He was Carl Gustav Gabrielson, born in Gothenburg, Sweden, on March 6, 1869.
